Charles “Chuck” D. Lougheed
August 22, 1927-2021
After a long and rich life, Charles passed away on the morning of his 94th birthday, in Sedona Winds Assisted living.
Born in Vancouver BC, to Catherine Elsie Davie and Ralph Burton Lougheed, he was the third of four brothers.
When he was 3, the family moved back to Washington State and Charles attended schools in Kelso, WA where he got his HS degree. In 1945, he was inducted in the US Army, and he served his country proudly until he retired from active duty, as Major, in October 1965 at Ft Huachuca. During his service, he was stationed overseas in Germany (Munich, Berlin), France (Metz), Korea, and at several bases at home (VA, CA, AZ). While serving in Berlin, Charles obtained his BSc in Military Sciences.
After retiring from the Army, he joined his first wife and two daughters in Geneva, Switzerland where he led a second career working at the YMCA, Graco Inc. and as Credit manager at Union Carbide Corp.
He married his second wife Betty in Geneva in 1969. They travelled a lot and fell in love with the beauty of Northern Arizona, and when Charles retired in 1985, they establishedtheir loving home in Sedona.
Charles was known for his lively and strong-willed character, his love for the outdoors, for skiing and for fishing, and for hisremarkable detailed memory that served well his passion for conversation - especially if it involved sharing good beer or wine and over food (but not vegetables). Charles spoke several languages, was an avid reader, and a daily Crosswords and Solitary card player. He never said no to any job or when help was needed. He was a long-time member and Bingo manager of the Elks Lodge of Sedona, and he served for over 25 years as a volunteer driver for the Verde Valley caregivers.
Charles and Betty travelled far, cruising the world from Australia to Tahiti, Bahamas to St Lucia, Alaska to Mexico, Chile to Buenos Aires, with a special fondness for Hawaii and most of Europe. Charles loved music, and he and Betty would always be the last couple on the dance floor.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Betty (Elisabeth), his daughters Christiane and Jacqueline, grandchildNelson, brothers- and sisters-in law, many nephews, and nieces, in Switzerland, South Africa, Canada and the United States.
The Celebration of Life will be held at Sedona Church of the Red Rocks, Tuesday 21 Sept 2021 at 10AM.
