Dicksie Donkersley Roer

June 13, 1927 — February 19, 2004

Dicksie Donkersley Roer, 76, of Camp Verde died February 19. She was born June 13, 1927 in Vernon, Arizona. She was the daughter of Floy Greer, of the Mormon Pioneers who were original settlers in Arizona, and John Leverton who came from Texas when he was 16. John homesteaded a small piece of land and eventually turned it into a major working ranch in eastern Arizona, the Mesa Redondo Ranch. Dicksie was the fourth child out of ten children born to John and Floy. When her brothers went off to World War II, Dicksie helped her dad run the ranch. She was always a cowgirl at heart. Dicksie met Raymond Donkersley II at college in Flagstaff. They were married on August 8, 1947. Dicksie and ''Donk'' were ranchers and eventually owned the Ponderosa Club in Pinetop, Arizona. They had two children, Raymond Bertschey Donkersley II, and Julieann DelMar. Raymond has two daughters, Sienna Rae and Leah Marie Donkersley. Dicksie and ''Donk'' lived in Flagstaff during their college years and the birth of their two children. She married Steve Roer on April 18, 1963, and helped him run the Steve Roer Construction Company in Flagstaff. They moved to the Verde Valley in 1969 where they lived for the duration of both their lives. Dicksie was bigger than life and lived it to the fullest in grand style. She had a generous heart and her door was always open. Dicksie was no stranger to pain and suffering, but she was a true survivor and always looked to a brighter day. She clung tenaciously to life to the very end. Dicksie was a strong, intelligent, wise and beautiful woman. She was a champion of women's rights and inspired and encouraged many young women. She will be greatly missed. Services will be held at the Mormon Church in Camp Verde, Arizona on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at 11:00 A.M. Dicksie's ashes will be scattered on the Mesa Redondo Ranch. Please, no flowers. Send donations in Dicksie's name to the Arthritis Foundation, 131 E. Osborn Rd., #200, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Westcott Funeral Home assisted the family with these arrangements.
