Dr. William Roberts Thurston, 88, a resident of Sedona died April 14. He was born November 1, 1915 in New York, New York. He spent his early childhood in Argentina and worked many years in Mexico and Cuba as an exploratory geologist. He was a graduate of Columbia University where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree and went on to earn his Doctorate in Philosophy at Columbia. He was a retired geologist, working for the U. S. Geological Survey. From 1965-1975, he also had been head of Earth Sciences at the National Academy of Sciences. He also taught at Brown and Columbia Universities. Dr. Thurston was a member of the Cosnos Club of Washington, D.C. He leaves his wife of 66 years, Sherry Thurston; a son, Thomas Thurston of Sedona. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Kachina Point Healthcare Rehab Activities Fund, 505 Jacks Canyon Rd., Sedona 86351.
