Frances Hatton Smith, aged 95, died Thursday, June 12, in Sedona, Arizona, after a brief illness. Frances was born in Meadville, PA, on May 27, 1917, the daughter of Roland Hatton and Algia Fonner Hatton. She graduated from North Shenango High School in 1937, and Meadville Commercial College, in 1939. She married William A. Smith on August 16, 1940. They retired to Lady Lake, Florida in 1991. William preceded her in death on January 6, 1994. Frances moved to Sedona AZ in 2009. Frances was a member of the Espyville Methodist Church. She was elected and served as the Tax Collector for North Shenango Township for many years. While in living in Florida, she was an active member of the North Lake Presbyterian Church in Lady Lake. She volunteered for several years with the Homebound organization, providing meals to elderly and disabled residents in the area, and at the local lending library. She enjoyed traveling, and surprised her friends and family by taking a European tour in 1998 and later a cruise to Alaska. Frances enjoyed many creative outlets, including knitting, crochet, sewing, and the traditional papercraft of quilling. She was a loving and supportive mother, as well as a loyal and steadfast friend to many. Survivors include her son, H Allen Smith, and his wife, Sandra L. Congdon Smith, of Sedona, AZ, and her daughter, Gail M. Smith of Oceanside, CA; three sisters, Nathalie Price of Meadville, Martha Western of Denver, CO, and Geraldine Heil of Leesburg, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William A. Smith, and two brothers, Harold Hatton of Meadville, PA, and Kenneth Hatton of Worcester, New York. A memorial will be held at Sedona Winds Retirement Community where she had lived for 4 years. Inurnment will be at the National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, alongside her husband of 54 years.
