Fred Harry Coukos

Fred Harry Coukos, 89, resident of Cottonwood, passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2007 in Payson, Arizona. He was born February 10, 1918 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Haralambos and Sophia Coukos. He proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant in the Tank Division. He was honored with the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his dedicated service. Fred worked for the William Simpson Construction Company, as well as for the world-wide construction company, Dillingham Corporation. It was in 1954 that Fred was sent to Sedona to see to the construction of the \u0027Chapel of the Holy Cross\u0027. Later, he built some of the tallest building is Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle; but it was the Chapel of the Holy Cross that everyone continued to talk about and inquire of. Fred enjoyed traveling the states with his wife, Lucille in their motorhome. He also liked riding horses and woodworking; and his love for the construction of buildings never faded. He was a father who truly loved his family; he was a leader of men, and a patriot to his country. He is one who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Fred is preceded in death by his lvoing wife of 53 years, Lucille; his daughter, Christine; and his son, Michael. He leaves behind his son, Rory Coukos with his wife, Carol of San Anselmo, California; his daughter, Diane Graceffa with her husband, James of Clarkdale; a brother, Christopher Coukos of Ft. Myers, Florida; a sister, Marie Stratos of Lynn, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Salvatore Graceffa, Angelee Graceffa, Sarah Coukos; and one great-grandchild, Rocco Graceffa, all of California.
