Herbert Johnson

Herbert Johnson of Cottonwood, was born in Breckenridge, MN on April 17, 1933 to Martha and Herbert Johnson. He grew up and attended school in Breckenridge, graduating in 1951. He went on to school at Moorhead University, Moorhead, MN, graduating in 1955 with a degree in mathematics education. Herb began his teaching career in the City of Minneapolis in 1956, teaching mathematics at Northeast JHS where he taught for 5 years. He attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota, New Mexico Highlands Univesity and the University of Oregon. He was awarded a Master\u0027s Degree at New Mexico, and a Doctorate at the University of Oregon. He worked for Beckman Instruments, Fullerton, CA for 5 years before joining the staff at Winona State University, Winona, MN in 1966. Herb taught mathematics at WSU until his retirement in 1993. He served as department chairman for ten years. During a leave of absence from WSU, 1986-88, Herb taught mathematics in Shah Alam, Malaysia as a Visiting Professor, Indiana University. Herb married Lois Swift on June 6, 1954. They were blessed with three children, Jay, Carrie and Peter. Herb and Lois moved to the Verde Valley in 1993. Herb was co-chairman of the Verde Village Long Range Planning Committee, and served for a number of years on the Verde Valley Concert Association Board. He served as president of the organization. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ray and his son Peter. He is survived by his wife, Lois; his two children, Jay of Wenatchee, WA and Carrie of Maple Valley, WA; Carrie\u0027s husband Kevin; Jay\u0027s wife Carole; six granddaughters and two grandsons; his sister Betty of Palm Springs, CA and his sister Mary and her husband Delmore of Carver, MN. A memorial service will be held for Herb on Monday, March 23, 2015 at 2 PM at Faith Lutheran Church, located on Fir Street in Cottonwood. Memorial donations may be made to the Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, 200 First St. SW, Rochester, MN 55905.
