Hilda Mohr

Cottonwood resident Hilda Mohr passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2017. She was born on March 10, 1925 to Fred and Elfrieda Sturzenbecher in Marion, South Dakota. Hilda was the second of four children and the first child in her family born in America. Hilda married William Mohr in 1942 and left farm life in South Dakota with her husband for employment in Michigan, supporting the war effort. The Mohrs later moved to western South Dakota and then to Flagstaff, AZ, where they lived for 25 years. There Hilda became the first female rural letter carrier at the Flagstaff Post Office. Keeping a cheerful sense of humor, she was always quick to point out that she was a letter carrier, not a mail carrier, because too many "males" wanted to be carried! Her VW Rabbit was a familiar and welcome sight to her customers when the snow piled high. After retiring, the Mohrs moved to Cottonwood, becoming very active in Faith Lutheran Church. Mrs. Mohr enjoyed making quilts that the church distributed to families with newborns. She also provided the artwork to complete Mr. Mohr\u0027s woodworking projects. They basked in the warm weather and the beautiful view from their deck. Hilda\u0027s life was guided by her unfailing faith in her savior. Her family will always remember and appreciate her down to earth approach to life and her firm resolve to achieve any goal. She will be missed by her family, her church family, and her many friends at Cottonwood Village. Mrs. Mohr was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years. She is survived by 2 sons, Richard (Amy), Alcoa, TN, Keith (Bridget), Cottonwood, AZ, and a daughter, Sandra Hevelone (Jim), Ten Mile, TN; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and one brother and one sister. A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 2021 E. Fir Street, Cottonwood, at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 6, 2017.
