James C. Carroll of Lake Montezuma passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2013. He was 98 years old. James was born in Brownwood, Texas on May 21, 1915 to J.B. and Ruth Carroll. He attended Santa Maria High School in Santa Maria, TX. After graduating, Jim went to work for Pan American Airways before joining the Army Air Corps to serve his country in WWII. After the war, he returned to work for Pan American as an in-flight service director. In this capacity, Jim had the opportunity to travel the world. He spoke fluent Spanish which served him well as he flew to South America often, along with Tokyo and Australia. He was one of the first people to ever fly in a 747, and once lost a game of chess to Ray Charles. Later in life, Jim was able to continue his travels in the U.S. as an official for the National Golf Association. He was also a driving force in the developing community of Lake Montezuma. He was one of the original members of the Fire Rescue Fund in Lake Montezuma as well as being a founding member of the Montezuma-Rimrock Fire Board and a member of the Property Owners Board. Jim enjoyed playing poker and golf and watching baseball, but one of his favorite things to do was to go to the mountains to cut firewood and picnic. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Gayle Carroll and his son James Carroll. He is survives by his son Mark (Julie) Carroll of CA; his daughters, Lisa DelCarlo and Karen (Phillip) McKain, both of AZ; and his sister Jessie Lowery of TX, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
