Jesse Ray Newton, Sr., 86, of Munds Park died March 10 in Flagstaff. He was born December 6, 1922 in Payden, Oklahoma, the son of John W. and Sara Bettis Newton. He served in World War II with the Marines. He was a private on Iwo Jima and was a few yards away as the flag was being raised. A few weeks later he was shot and received the Purple Heart for his injuries. Mr. Newton was a general contractor. He loved hunting and fishing. He leaves two sons, Jesse R. Newton, Jr. and Donald L. Newton, both of Munds Park; a daughter Edith Daymude of Cottonwood; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren. An hour of visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 17 in the Westcott Funeral Home at 10 AM followed by the funeral service at 11 AM. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery.
