Joy Matthews, a long-time resident of Sedona, entered Eternal Life on September 6, 2018. Joy was born on May 19, 1934, in New York City and she taught in the New York City public school system in Staten Island, where she inspired and encouraged all her students to explore art and music in a highly creative and non-judgmental way. She was also the Music Director in an Episcopal Church. Joy chose to retire in Sedona, Arizona for its beauty and pristine atmosphere. Here she continued making music, serving as the pianist at St. John Vianney Church for over twenty years. Joy filled her life making music and creating art. Prior to her passing, she expressed her gratitude for this and for the gift of being part of the St. John Vianney parish community. She is survived by her long-time friend Laura De Ponte. Joys parents, George and Gertrude, and her friend Dorothy have all gone before her. She is remembered fondly by all who knew her for her intense love for and dedication to the Arts, her own unique artistic vision, her deep kindness and compassion, and her passionate, yet ever-gentle Spirit. A mass of resurrection will celebrate Joys life, on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 11am, followed by a lunch reception at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 180 St. John Vianney Lane, Sedona, AZ. In lieu of flowers, her friends ask that a donation be made instead to the Humane Society.
