Lester A. Border, 93, resident of Cottonwood, Arizona, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006. He was born on January 3, 1913 in Decatur, Illinois to John and Nellie Border. Lester graduated from Columbia Academy, located in Vancouver, Washington in 1935, and then attended Walla Walla College in College Place, Washington. Lester married Geraldine Poole on June 6, 1939 in College Place, Washington. During World War II, Lester worked as a Journeyman Machinist in the Bremerton Navy Yard. Combining his skills as a Journeyman Machinist with his experience and training in power plant operations, along with his natural ability to understand how machines and engines work, Lester became a skilled operator of power plants and maintenance engineering in large institutions. Lester headed up the Plant Services at Washington Adventist Hospital in Tacoma Place, Maryland, Porter Memorial Hospital in Denver, Colorado and Walla Walla College in College Place, Washington. Following his retirement from Walla Walla College he served in plant services at Sydney Adventist Hospital in Sydney, Australia. Lester and his wife, Geraldine have traveled extensively and have volunteered for many Maranatha Mission projects. Lester was a member of the American Hospital Association as a charter member of the Department for Hospital Engineers. He was licensed as a Steam Engineer, as well as, a Professional Locksmith. He was also a member of the Cottonwood Seventh-day Adventist Church. Lester is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Lewis Border, who passed away in 1974. He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Geraldine Border, who lives in Cottonwood, Arizona; his daughter, Sylvia Grindley, who resides in Cottonwood, Arizona with her husband, Jim; his grandson, Robert Gates, who lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee with his wife, Julie and two sons, Robin and Jamie (Lester\u0027s great-grandsons); his granddaughter, Suzanne Tasker, who lives in Hawaii with her husband, Duane and daughter, Emily Compton (Lester\u0027s great-granddaughter). Lester is also survived by his brother, Homer, who lives in Milton Freewater, Oregon and his sister, Geneva Haynes, who lives in Livermore, California. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2006 at 4:00pm at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 51 W. Mingus Ave., in Cottonwood (Corner of Mingus and Willard).
