Louis Getoff died March 16, 2013 at age 89 in his home in Sedona, Arizona after a long life full of self-examination, intellectual pursuits and social action. He graduated from P.S. 4 and Morris High School in Bronx, N.Y. and City College of N.Y. class of 1944. Raised by Russian immigrant parents, he obtained a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Columbia and practiced psychotherapy and psychoanalysis for over 60 years in Manhattan, Southold, Westbury, and Sedona, as well as taught and supervised other psychotherapists and psychoanalysts for over 40 years. He was proud that his life\u0027s work was to "help people live with less suffering." He was instrumental in the founding of the Sedona Jewish Community, the first synagogue in Sedona. He served on the boards of several Sedona community organization and played tennis until two months before his death, recently beating players 20 years his junior. He was a powerful and courageous man who lived, and died, on his own terms and will be missed by life partner Ethel Schelz, children David, Michael, Maria, and Sarah, step-daughters Ellyn and Mary-Jane, and grandchildren Dara, Molly, Sofia, Evan, Alex, and Michael. He was preceded in death by brother Hyman and sister Hannah. There will a service of memorial on April 20, 2013 from 4-6 PM at the Jewsih Community Center, 100 Meadowlark Lane in Sedona, Arizona.
