Mary Emelda Bruland

Mary Emelda Bruland, 94, of Sedona passed away on Thursday, January 20th. Mary was born on July 18, 1910. Her parents were immigrants from Hungary, and homesteaded land near Pastura, New Mexico. Her father died before she was born, and her mother, Anna was able to eventually take her family(two sons and two daughters)to California. Mary attended grammar and high school in Los Angeles, and later Los Angeles Junior College. She was married to her husband, Raymond in November 1940, and thereafter, due to her husband\u0027s career moves, lived in numerous places. She had three children, Melinda, who was born in Los Angeles, and sons Richard and Steven, born in Lima, Peru. After five and one half years in Lima, the family moved to Dallas, Texas, where they lived for five years, followed by one and one half years in Madrid, Spain, four years in Geneva, Switzerland. two years in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, two more years in Geneva, two years in England, one year in Dallas, and back to California, where the family lived in Woodland Hills for about 17 years before Ray\u0027s retirement, after which, in 1984 they came to Sedona. As a young woman, Mary enjoyed playing tennis, and eventually was alsoa good bowler. She became a talented artisan, creating numerous hooked rugs and wall hangings, mostly primitive designs from the Incas and from Navajo and Hopi art. Mary is survived by her husband of sixty four years, Raymond V. Bruland of Sedona, sons Richard Bruland of Los Angeles, California and Steven Bruland of Stirling, S.A. Australia, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter Melinda in 1996. A memorial mass will be celebrated for Mary at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Sedona at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, February 7. Westcott Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
