Merrill Eugene Roberts, 84, resident of Cottonwood, passed away Monday, February 19, 2007. He was born October 15, 1922 to Jacob L. and Minnie Mae (Peavy) Roberts in Pinehurst, Georgia, where he also grew up and graduated from the local high school. Following High School, Merrill attended North Georgia College. Merrill entered the United States Air Force on May 28, 1943, and dedicated 18 years of his life in service to his country. After having served during both WWII and the Korean Conflict as a fighter pilot, being decorated with the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal of Merit, Merrill retired on June 30, 1961 as a Lt. Colonel. He also worked as a project estimator within the aerospace industry. His hobbies included walking, reading, golfing, and charities. His favorite thing to do was spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Merrill took a great deal of pride in his family, he was a loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa, and fulfilled his roles as such dedication and devotion. He will always remain in the hearts of his family and friends. Merrill is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Sandra Roberts; and his grandson, Jesse Roberts. He leaves behind his sons, Stephen Roberts of Oregon, David Roberts with his wife Cathie of California, Michael Roberts with his wife Valerie of Florida, and John Roberts of Arizona; his daughter, Mary Ann Gaddi-Pati with her husband Venkat of Maine; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
