Michael John Shine

September 17, 1937 — March 5, 2020

Michael John Shine, or Mike to his friends, 83, of Cottonwood, Arizona passed away on March 5, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents William John Shine and Mary McReynolds.
Mike is survived by his wife Barbara of Cottonwood; they raised two children in their 63-years of marriage, James Andrew of Wickenburg, and Stephanie Shine Robinson (Todd) of Cornville. He is also survived by his sister, Jane Marie Thorne of Cold Spring Harbor, NY, granddaughter Alize Robinson, grandson Alex Robinson, and 8 nieces and nephews.
Mike was born on September 17, 1937 in Bronx, NY as a first-generation Irish American with elementary education from the Christian Brothers at St. Lukes and the LaSalle Academy in 1955. He was the first in his family to attend college, graduating first from Long Island A\u0026T in Farmingdale with-in 1955 and then from Michigan State University in 1963. After college, he worked for the US Department of Agriculture as a market news reporter in various parts of the country. He met Barbara while working in Sanford, FL and they moved to Madison, WI shortly after getting married. They later moved to Nogales, AZ before winding up in Phoenix, AZ in 1975 where they raised their two children and maintained their home even though Mike finished his career in New York and Los Angeles. Mike was active as a youth soccer referee throughout the 1980\u0027s as well as serving as both a member and director of their homeowner\u0027s association in Phoenix. After retiring from the USDA in 1994, Mike remained active in the HOA until he joined the Lions Club International in 2002. He was an exceptionally active volunteer with the Lions throughout Arizona as well as internationally; Mike focused his energy on the Arizona Sight and Hearing Foundation, serving as its President for 4-years, Director for 12-years, and receiving a Melvin Jones Fellowship while also mentoring the establishment of several new Lion\u0027s Clubs in the Valley.
A joyous memorial will be held at 10:30am on St. Patrick\u0027s Day, Tuesday March 17 at Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood with burial to follow at All Souls Cemetery.
