Ora Dean Long, 84, resident of Cottonwood, passed away at home-surrounded by his family-on Tuesday, January 15, 2008. He was born in Dallas Center, Iowa on January 14, 1924 to Edwin R. Long and Golda F. (Huffman) Long. After graduating from Adel High School he went into the United States Army. He served in the motor pool as Corporal during WWII. He was discharged in 1946 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. It was in Sheridan that he met his wife, Christine Marie Sorenson; they were married June 6, 1946. Professionally, Ora dedicated 25 years of his life to Kerr-McGee Nuclear Fuels as foreman. He volunteered his time to the Fire Departments of Adel, Iowa; Nucla, Colorado; and Grants, New Mexico. Ora also took part in the Mounted Patrol while in New Mexico. During his off-time, he enjoyed wood working, photography; as well as, hunting and fishing. He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years; and both parents. He leaves behind his sons, Herman W. Long with his wife, Marlene of Bremen, Nebraska, Larry D. Long with his wife, Beverly of Grants, New Mexico, and James E. Long with his wife, Linda of Flagstaff, Arizona; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Verla Marquardt with her husband, Otis of Rowlett, Texas, and Joan Short of Redfield, Iowa.
