Richard Melvin McVannel, 68, of Cottonwood died December 18, 2012. H e was born June 27, 1944 in Gaylord, Michigan, the son of Peter Hector McVannel and Ailie Elizabeth Kuivinen McVannel. Mr. McVannel was a graduate of Gaylord High School. He served his country in the Air Force earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He worked for Weyerhauser, Gaylord Building Construction, United Building Center, Petrosky, Michigan, ProBuild in Cottonwood and Sedona, Arizona. He served on the Fair Board in Gaylord, Michigan and the Beginning Experience in Boyne City, Michigan. He was a member of the Verde Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and was director of the Mutual Unidentified Flying Objects Network for six years in Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Louise Pierce and her husband Ben; Brother Keith McVannel. Mr. McVannel leaves his wife of 24 years, Brenda; his children Brett McVannel (Alicia) of Gaylord, Michigan; Brian McVannel (Robyn) of Alpena, Michigan, Meaghan McVannel of Gaylord, Michigan, Amanada McVannel Richards (Joseph) of Boyne Falls, Michigan and Samuel McVannel of Conway, Michigan; stepchildren Richard Joyce of Traverse City, Michigan, Robert Joyce (Diane) of Omena, Michigan, Kathey Stuteman (Chuck) of Boyne City, Michigan, Carrie King Joyce of Traverse City, Michigan and Christine Davies Joyce of Central Lake, Michigan; twenty-six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
