Roy L. Kurtz, 99, of Cottonwood died February 20. He was born July 2, 1909 in Barberton, Ohio, the son of Emery Jacob Kurtz and Gertrude Anna Young Kurtz. He attended Phoenix elementary schools and Murphy-Alhambra and Phoenix Union High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving the Army Air Corp. Mr. Kurtz worked at the Sedona Lodge when western movies were made in Sedona. He also worked at the ranch of Jack and Helen Frye . He later discovered he had a skill in carpentry, moved to Phoenix some years after World War II and built homes, banks and churches. He loved to bowl, loved to watch sports, the D" backs", the Suns, Cardinals and Phoenix Mercury were some of his favorite teams. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Barbara Downs, brother Walter and sisters Helen, Florence, Gertrude and Alpha. Mr. Kurtz is survived by a son, Richard L. Kurtz of Cottonwood, stepson, Joe Derezinski of Katy, Texas, daughters, Mary L. Piper of Cottonwood, Helen (Randy) Hopp of Glendale and Joanne (Vincent) Loparco of New York; stepdauthers, Jolene Nichols, Toni Alford and Susan Wells; sister Grace Jones of St. David and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. An hour of visitation will be held on Saturday, March 14 in the Westcott Funeral Home at 9:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 10 AM.
