Ruth C. Smith, 87, resident of Cottonwood, Arizona, passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2006. She was born on October 29, 1918 to Norman Wesley and Nancy Jane (Bowman) Clark in Pembroke, Maine. She was the youngest of nine children. Ruth graduated High School in 1930 as Valedictorian in Dennysville, Maine. Following High School, she attended the Machia's Normal School, now known as the University of Maine. Ruth was proud to carry the titles of wife, mother and homemaker. She was very involved in her community and volunteered much of her time to local organizations. She served on maternal-child health councils; she worked as a Scout Leader and with the student exchange program. Ruth was an avid reader, and during her years in Maine she was well known as a horsewoman. She is preceded in death by her parents, and all eight of her siblings. Ruth was the loving wife of William "Bill" R. Smith of Cottonwood, Arizona for 66 beautiful years; she was the devoted mother of William A. Smith and his wife, Deborah, of Flagstaff, Arizona, Nancy S. Simmons of Cottonwood, Arizona, and Catherine S. Walsh and her husband, James, of New Haven, Vermont; she was the adored grandmother of 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
