Shirley Jean "Granny" Smith, 66, of Cottonwood died September 9. She was born April 18, 1943 in Jackson, Michigan, the daughter of Carl and Hazel Helton. She was a graduate of Logansport High School and attended Yavapai College. She worked as a cook, waitress and factory worker. She also had worked as the communication director of the Old Town Mission bringing people to the Lord. She was a member of the Garden Community Church where she worked in their outreach and was an avid lover of Jesus. She also enjoyed bingo, rummy, zilch and Elvis. Her family will remember her as a loving mother, grandmother and friend to all. She will be missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Smith; her parents and son Michael Helton, Sr. She leaves sons, Tim Curtis (Christina), Dave Curtis (Sheri), both of Cottonwood; daughters, Loretta Louise Combs of Cottonwood, Tami Blakenship (Joe) of Colorado and Sherry Brewster (Pat) of Wisconsin; fourteen grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren She also included Pastor Jesse and Darlene Gamble and friend Frank Murdaugh as her "family". A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 26 in the Garden Community Church, 1 S. Main St., Cottonwood at 1:00 PM.
