Virgil Eugene Whitworth, 76, of Cottonwood died February 22. He was born February 26, 1927 in Garnet, Kansas. He attended schools in Beatrice, Nebraska and Phillips University of Enid, Oklahoma. An Army veteran of World War II, the Whitworths lived in Deming, New Mexico from 1959-1972 and in Sedona from 1972-1980. He was retired chief of maintenance of Salinas National Monument. Previously he was a contractor, carpenter, master craftsman and church furniture manufacturer. He loved God and was a Christian man. Mr. Whitworth enjoyed fishing, reading, poetry, camping, family activities, gardening and joke telling. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Delina Whitworth; a son, Jock Whitworth, superintendent of Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah; a daughter, Mary Garrett, director of The Little Lambs pre-school in Deming, New Mexico; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His parents, John and Jewel Josephine Whitworth, a brother, Bill Whitworth an a sister, Rosie Tatro preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28 in the Bethany Baptist Church on Russell Street on the Yavapai-Apache Nation in Clardkale at 2 PM.
